Expression of Interest for Topic-sessions

From June 15th to September 30th this year, the Secretariat of the 4th World Water Forum was actively soliciting “expressions of interest” in organizing topic-sessions from key organizations around the world, so as to have a long list of session proposals. By that deadline, over 500 proposals from almost 50 countries had been received, showing the great level of interest in the event. We sincerely thank all those interested in organizing topic-sessions for your commitment to the cause.

This process led to a selection of a good number of quality sessions at the Forum, many of them mergers of two or more original proposals. Through this process, sessions were selected to cover all of the main issues related to each of the five framework themes, thus providing coherence both within each theme and between them. Efforts were made to channel session proposals not selected as such into other activities around the Forum, such as side-events or activities in the Learning Center.

The selection process was carried out by the Forum Secretariat, greatly helped in this task by the Beacons, Regional Committees and Interest Group Coordinators, especially during a meeting of these groups held in Monterrey, Mexico, from October 31st to November 2nd.

Following the selection of the topic-sessions, conveners were asked to select the local actions to be presented at their sessions from the database of actions registered on the Forum website. Actions were to present a balanced position between them, to be relevant to the topic of the session, to present a good potential for knowledge sharing and to allow the drawing-up of policy recommendations on how to strengthen local action on the subject of the session.

The results of the topic-sessions were analyzed in order to understand and synthesize the outputs for each theme. The main objective of the Forum was to understand and capitalize experiences from all over the world, highlighting and scaling innovative solutions for water management. The expected output of the Forum was a clear definition of new frameworks for the replication of successful experiences, and the topic-sessions are the main vehicle to achieve this framework.
